There are 5 focus areas of challenges to choose from for the hackathon.

Environment
  • Develop sustainable land use and conservation efforts that protect the environment while meeting local economic and social needs.
  • Address pressing environmental issues facing African communities, such as deforestation, desertification, soil erosion, water pollution, and air pollution
  • Propose innovative waste management solutions to reduce the environmental impact of waste disposal.
  • Promote the use of renewable energy and energy efficiency to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and promote sustainable development.
  • Encourage the adoption of sustainable agricultural practices that promote soil health, water conservation, and biodiversity
Agriculture
  • Improve agricultural practices and productivity while reducing environmental impacts.
  • Propose solutions to problems such as soil degradation, pests and diseases, water scarcity, and low yields.
  • Explore innovative techniques such as precision farming, agroforestry, and aquaponics.
  • Use technology to improve market access and supply chain efficiency, such as through mobile-enabled farmer cooperatives and e-commerce platforms.
  • Develop solutions that promote inclusive growth and social equity, such as through women-led agribusinesses and youth entrepreneurship programs
Renewable Energy
  • Harness Africa’s renewable energy potential, including solar, wind, hydro, and geothermal resources.
  • Expand access to clean energy for communities throughout the continent, especially in rural and underserved areas.
  • Address challenges such as high upfront costs, unreliable grid infrastructure, and low energy demand.
  • Leverage energy storage, microgrids, and off-grid solutions to expand energy access and promote energy security.
  • Use innovative financing models, such as pay-as-you-go and community-owned energy systems, to promote sustainability and inclusivity
Transportation
  • Develop innovative transportation solutions that address challenges such as inadequate infrastructure, high costs, and safety concerns.
  • Promote low-carbon and low-emissions transport options, such as electric vehicles, bicycles, and ride-sharing services.

Health
  • Develop innovative solutions to African communities’ health challenges, such as infectious diseases, malnutrition, and lack of access to healthcare services.
  • Improve healthcare supply chains to ensure the availability of essential medicines and supplies.
  • Expand access to telemedicine and e-health solutions to promote remote diagnosis and treatment.
  • Use data and analytics to better target healthcare interventions and improve health outcomes.
